Polydor Records has the distinction
of being the first label on which the Beatles appeared in Japan,
although hardly anyone at the time realized it was the Beatles.
Polydor, a division of the Nippon Grammophon Company Ltd.,
unceremoniously began the history of the Beatles on vinyl in Japan
on 1st. May 1962 when it released the single "My Bonnie Twist /
The Saints by Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers (DP-1254)". Less than two years later, the Beat Brothers featured on this record would become known to Japan and the world as The Beatles. But 1962, this release made as little impact on the Japanese market as the Decca release of My Bonnie had made on the U.S. market, and was quickly forgotten. As a result, this record is generally considered to be one of the most rare and valuable of all Beatles commercial releases in Japan. |
