During
the
autumn of 1977, EMIfs mail order subsidiary, World Records, released
a new boxed set entitled The Beatles Collection, of the 24 singles
from Love Me Do to Back In The U.S.S.R, available by mail order
only, and not through the usual retail outlets. The 24 singles were in the same green sleeves as the March 1976 re-releases, and packaged in a special gold embossed box. The collection was heavily advertised in the national press with full page advertisements and also with postal circulars, which included a promotional flexidisc (SFI 291), to World Records regular customers. |

This flexidisc was sent to
potential buyers of The Beatles Box Set - "The Singles Collection
1962-1970", a 24 record set of Beatles singles issued by World
Records Ltd. This collection was only for sale through EMI's mail order division, World Records Ltd. =A member of the THORN EMI Group. (maybe) The package contains: the MONO flexidisc "sampler" of excerpts from songs with narration; fold out picture sleeve; reservation certificate, numbered 7172; invitation letter detailing the box set. The flexi disc features extracts from a selection of the singles included in the box set. The label states "This Sampler Is For Demonstration Purposes Only" and "Not For Sale". As with all flexi discs this is very much a promotional item and not produced for top sound quality. This all comes housed in its original envelope/mailer which has 'The Beatles' printed in the top left corner. * Sound For Industry is a British record manufacturing company similar to Lyntone. They specialised in Flexi-discs and developed the 'Sound-Kard', a Flexi-disc laminated to a printed backing card. On 6 February 1976 the 9 year contract The Beatles had signed with EMI came to an end. However EMI retained the right to reissue anything it wanted from the old catalogue. So it released gThe Singles Collection 1962 - 1970h. The first edition of The Singles Collection came with 22 singles in a green box. All 22 singles had the same design for the front sleeve but different photographs on the rear. A little later EMI released the collection in a newly designed box (2nd Edition) and added "Yesterday / I Should Have Known Better (R 6013)". As this sold out, it was reissued with 24 singles, adding "Back In The U.S.S.R. / Twist And Shout (R 6016)". The 3rd Edition of The Singles Collection was issued in 1978. EMI again added a new single, "Sgt. Pepperfs Lonely Hearts Club Band / With A Little Help From My Friends/A Day In The Life (R 6022)". |
