Capitol black label with multicolor band with white
perimeter print in black area: without ".... Subsidiary of ...." perimeter print. The first issue has a photo of the group dressed in white butcher smocks with cut of raw meat and toy doll parts on the front cover. These first state issues were mainly distributed to the media and record company personnel. Very few were actually sold retail. A letter of recall was sent to distributors requesting that all copies were returned to Capitol Records. Due to the controversial nature of the "Butcher cover", Capitol Records initially planned to destroy all copies. After the destruction of several thousand copies, Capitol realized that pasting replacement slicks over the "Butcher cover" would be a more economical approach to solving their problem. This replacement version is known as the "Trunk cover paste-over". "Peeled" refers to the fact that the "Trunk slick" has been peeled off the "Butcher slick" underneath. |
