Polydor
Orange Scroll logomark was printed at the top of the label. Press comany's name "DEUTSCHEN GRAMMOPHON GESELLSCAFT" was printed at the perimeter. The artists according to the labels and coverof this single are "Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers". According to the release protocols in Polydor's archives in Hamburg Tony Sheridan recorded "Swanee River" on two different occasions in Hamburg during the years 1961-1962. This was in December 1961, and in May 1962. On the latter recording it is most certainly The Beatles who back Tony Sheridan. All of the releases with Tony Sheridan which include "Swanee River", have one and the same recording of the song, and it has not been possible to confirm which of the two recorded versions of "Swanee River" is on the records, thus making it uncertain if it is The Beatles who play on the B-side of the single or not, however, the only existing version of this song today. Since both this single and the LP "My Bonnie (LPHM 46612/SLPHM 237112) contain the same recording of "Swanee River" an argument for that the released recording should be the one made in December 1961, is that the original master for this LP was made already on March 26, 1962. That is to say before the second recording of "Swanee River" was made. On the other hand, the transmission application for the "My Bonnie" LP also states that the record should be released immediately. This never happened and instead the release date was put forward until June. The reason for this is not known, however one explination might be that in the end the people in charge weren't pleased with some of the recordings intended for this LP, and instead decided to wait until Kaempfert had made the recording session with Tony Sheridan in May 1962, before they decided the final order of songs. Why should Tony Sheridan otherwise at the May 1962 session have re-recorded two songs he had already recorded once in December the year before? It is also possible that Polydor after the May session had a new master made for the "My Bonnie" LP with the new recording of "Swanee River", but today no one remembers anymore. On the A-side of the single is a recording of "You Are My Sunshine" with Tony Sheridan from December 1961. This recording like "Swanee River" had already been released earlier in Germany, both in mono and in stereo on the LP "My Bonnie (LPHM46612/SLPHM 237112)", when this single came out. The Beatles do not play on the recording of "You Are My Sunshine". (from "Beatles From Cavern to Star--Club (Hans Olof Gottfridsson) |
