COMMENTS
|
Japanese 10th E.P. Promotional record. In Japan, promotional records have traditionally been provided at no charge to radio stations, record shops, and the mass media to increase the sales of a record or in some cases to promote a tour. There are two main types of promotional releases. The first type is called "White label promo" for which a unique label has been made. Sometimes unique cover art accompanies a white label promo release but most usually, the regular cover is used with appropriate alternations to prohibit commercial sale. The second type of promo record is less elabolate and is called a "Sticker promo". It is simply a regular commercial release that has had a promo sticker affixed to the cover and usually the obi, if any. This type of promo is occasionally found on post-1975 releases. The label design of Odeon White label promo EPs is very similar to that of regular commercial Odeon EPs. The promo version, however, features the perimeter print, Odeon logo, and circled text in red and all other printing is black. The print in black has an unusual "hand lettered" look to it quite unlike the regular commercial version. The release date is in black and appears above and the left of the title. Note the two Japanese characters at the left hand corner and compare them to those previously shown on the stickers. Approximate translation of the text is: "Sample under Article 10, Clause 2 of the Commodity Tax Law". This appears to be a tax exemption notice. Toshiba EMI made duophonic mixes for the nine songs that had no stereo masters at the time the EPs were compiled. "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "She Loves You", "Long Tall Sally", Match Box", "Slow Down", "Sie Liebt Dich", "Paperback Writer", "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" are effective simulated stereo mixes. |

Reissue of #10-5. Dark green apple label. In 1969, Toshiba had to reissue on the Apple label all the records previously issued on the Odeon label. And in the Apple label, there are two subtypes, TOSHIBA MUSICAL INDUSTRIES and TOSHIBA EMI. Further more, the early copies of the APPLE-TOSHIBA MUSICAL INDUSTRIES type have dark Apple on its label, though the late copies have light one. Further more, the early copies of the APPLE-TOSHIBA MUSICAL INDUSTRIES type have dark Apple on its label, though the late copies have light one. "Toshiba EMI kabushikigaisha" was printed at the bottom of the back cover. "I ¥700" was printed at the bottom of the back cover. On both labels, the ridge (double line) is approximately 8mm from the center hole (Gramophone Contract press?). The words "MFD. BY TOSHIBA MUSICAL INDUSTRIES LTD. JAPAN" was printed at the bottom of the label. |

COMMENTS
|
Reissue of #10-11. The 3rd. label change was the expiration of Toshiba's contract with Apple, resulting in the discontinuance of the Apple label. Toshiba had already begun use of the new EMI/Odeon label as early as 1976 on certain new releases not covered under the Apple label. By the early 1980's, the EMI/Odeon label had completely supplanted the Apple label on all Beatles releases. When the record label change, the EMI/Odeon logo also replaced the Apple logo on the front sleeves of all records. |
