COMMENTS
Capitol Red and Orange Target Label type-1 (with Dome Capitol logo)
Small font version (Scranton press)

In April, 1969, Capitol switched to a red and orange target label with the Capitol dome logo overprinted in black at nine o'clock. This new look label was quickly revised in July, 1969, with the Capitol dome logo being replaced by Capitol's new circle logo.
Unfortunately, the black circle logo did not always print well, often causing the image to appear as a muddy-looking black circle with a red dot in the center. This problem was corrected in early 1971, when the logo was given a white background and printed as part of the label backdrop. This gave the logo needed definition.
During the time singles were pressed with target labels, Capitol was pressing the bulk of its singles at its Scranton and Los Angeles factories. Limited runs of a few titles were also pressed by its Jacksonville plant.
There are four confirmed variations of the target dome logo singles:
  • (1) Keystone labels with standard-size print (Scranton)
  • (2) Keystone labels with reduced-size print (Scranton)
  • (3) wide font labels (normally Los Angeles)
  • (4) small print labels (normally Scranton)

The Scranton pressings with Keystone labels have the AlM logo stamped in their trail off areas. The typesetting is the same as that found on the original East Coast issues.
The discs with wide font labels were normally pressed by Capitol's Los Angeles factory. Los Angeles pressings have the * machine stamp in their trail off areas. These labels have the same style typesetting as the wide font swirl labels used in 1968 for some of the later run Hello Goodbye (Capitol 2056) and Lady Madonna (Capitol 2138) West Coast singles.
Some titles were issued with labels that have significantly smaller print than that found on other labels. Discs with these labels, normally Scranton pressings.

COMMENTS
Capitol Red and Orange Target Label type-2-1 with Circle Capitol TM logo overprint.

There are five basic variations of the target circle logo overprint labels:
  • (1) Keystone labels with standard-size print (Scranton)
  • (2) Keystone labels with reduced-size print (Scranton)
  • (3) wide font labels (Los Angeles or Scranton)
  • (4) small print labels (normally Scranton)
  • (5) Scranton labels with atypical fonts (Scranton)
The Los Angeles wide font labels best present the new Capitol circle logo, with the outer ring clearly appearing as the letter "C" for Capitol and the inner ring symbolizing a record. The Scranton labels often have muddy-looking logos, often to the point where the line between the outer and inner rings disappears, leaving an image of a solid black circle with a red dot in its center.

There are two variations of the Capitol circle logo on these labels.(maybe)
  • 1) The first has a TM designation following the word Capitol.
  • 2) After securing the trade mark for the logo, Capitol switched the TM marking to the ® symbol, which appears below the "l" in Capitol.
